New engineered landfill for a cleaner Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan, Wednesday 14 July 2010.

 

The BEDB (Brunei Economic Development Board) today held a briefing on the plans for managing Brunei Darussalam’s waste disposal through the construction of a Modern Waste Management Facility at Sungai Paku, and a Transfer Station in Bandar Seri Begawan.

 

The project, which will be implemented by ST Marine-QAF a Singapore-Brunei consortium, is expected to bring significant environmental benefits to Brunei through the advanced technology that will be used in the construction of a state-of-the-art engineered landfill to be located at Sungai Paku. A transfer station will also be located in Bandar Seri Begawan to serve as a drop-off and collection point for the Brunei Muara District’s waste, with regular scheduled transfers to the new landfill.

 

Present as the guest of honour at the briefing was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Development.

 

The ceremony, which took place at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong, began with welcoming remarks by Acting Chairman of the BEDB, Dato Paduka Timothy Ong. This was followed by a presentation on the development of a Modern Waste Management Facility for Brunei Darussalam, delivered by Mr Ng Sing Chan, President of ST Marine.

 

The event also saw the signing of contract between the BEDB and the winning Consortium to develop the said Facility. Signing on behalf of the BEDB was its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Vincent Cheong, witnessed by Mr Julian Fung, Assistant CEO and Head of Infrastructure Development division. Meanwhile, signing on behalf of ST Marine-QAF Consortium was the President of ST Marine, Mr Ng Sing Chan, witnessed by Mr Roland Ang, the Vice-President of ST Marine.

 

“It is our objective that the implementation of this project will modernise Brunei’s waste management system and contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more attractive environment not only for the people of Brunei but also for investors”, said Mr Julian Fung.

 

The ceremony was attended by senior government officials as well as members of the local business community.
