SUPPORTING LOCAL SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMEs)

The BEDB is committed to the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Brunei Darussalam as an important part of its mission.

The BEDB supports local SME development in the following ways:

• By expanding the local market for local SMEs through the development of new industries and business clusters.
An example is the development of the petrochemical hub at SPARK in Sungai Liang that will create over time many new business opportunities for local SME suppliers and contractors.

• By facilitating new business opportunities for local SMEs in partnership with foreign investors. An example is the Cooperation Agreement between the BEDB and the Brunei Methanol Company (BMC) to support local SMEs and promote employment opportunities for local people.

• Through the development of new facilities to enhance local SME competitiveness and development.
An example is the iCentre at Anggerek Desa, Brunei’s first technology incubator which provides business mentorship and marketing support for local ICT companies.

New initiatives by the BEDB to support local SMEs include:

• A Youth development programme and small business grants scheme for the Youth Development Centre (Pusat Pembangunan Belia) of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports developed in partnership with leading American company, Alcoa, to be launched in July 2008.

• A small business/technology park at Anggerek Desa building on the success of the iCentre to be implemented in phases over the next 3 years.

• A Venture capital fund focussing on promising local technology start-ups currently under study with launch targeted for end 2008.
